WIC FAQs

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a public health nutrition program under the USDA providing nutrition education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals for income-eligible women who are pregnant or post-partum, infants, and children up to age 5. The program has an extraordinary 40-year record of preventing children's health problems and improving their long-term health, growth and development. WIC serves over 9.1 million women, infants and children through over 10,000 clinics nationwide. In 2013, Maryland WIC served over 145,000 women, infants and children each month.
To be eligible for WIC you must: Live in Maryland and are a(n)
  • Pregnant woman
  • New mom (up to six months after delivery)
  • Breastfeeding mom (up to one year after delivery)
  • Infant
  • Child under the age of five
and and
  • You have a nutritional need
    You can:
    • Have a job or be unemployed
    • Own a home or live with friends or relatives
    • Be married or single
    • Be a father, mother, guardian, or grandparent and apply for benefits for an infant or child under the age of 5
Maryland WIC Program Income Guidelines Check the income guidelines to see if you qualify for WIC HERE. If your family receives less than the amount listed, you may be eligible. Foster care, Medical Assistance, Temporary Cash Assistance and Food Supplement Program clients are income eligible. Sample Description

WIC Provides You:
  • Peer Counselors: These are successful breastfeeding mothers trained to support basic breastfeeding.
  • Lactation Consultants: Trained for more complex breastfeeding issues.
  • Support Groups: Meet other breastfeeding mothers and check your baby’s weight.
  • Breast pumps: Available as needed.
  • Increased food packages for both mom and baby.
  • Individual appointments: Meet with the peer counselor or lactation consultant for personal help with breastfeeding concerns.
  • Education: Classes and personalized information on breastfeeding and baby behavior.
