All about STI testing

Uncategorized / August 12, 2019

The Harford County Health Department offers STI testing, treatment, and linkage to care services. We’ve laid out some of the most common tests a person can expect to receive when visiting our STI clinic.

Chlamydia
How the test is done: Swab of genital area, swab of throat or urine sample.
What you need to know: If you have had oral or anal sex, tell your healthcare provider. A urine sample alone will not detect an oral or anal infection. Ask about extragenital testing!

Gonorrhea
How the test is done: Swab of genital area, swab of throat or urine sample.
What you need to know: If you have had oral or anal sex, tell your healthcare provider. A urine sample alone will not detect an oral or anal infection. Ask about extragenital testing!

Trichomoniasis
How the test is done: Swab of infected area, physical exam or urine sample.
What you need to know: “Trich” is harder to detect in men than in women. It’s important for people of all genders to be screened.

Don’t forget to get tested for HIV, Syphilis, and Viral Hepatitis, too!
