Over the past year we’ve seen many new developments in harm reduction in Harford County. In celebration of recovery month, we’re highlighting efforts that support people who use drugs, helping many to stay alive and well in order to enter recovery.
Harford County Harm Reduction Community Advisory Board
Convened in December of 2019, this group facilitates new ventures related to harm reduction. It’s comprised of individuals who support harm reduction approaches to addiction and recovery, working together to advocate for resources and support for Harford County residents. The Community Advisory Board is community-driven, operating independently of the Health Department. The Advisory Board meets every second Wednesday from 6-8pm. Bel Air Police Department LEAD Program
The Bel Air Police Department launched a new Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program in partnership with Springboard Community Services. The program allows law enforcement to divert individuals to community-based, harm-reduction interventions for law violations driven by unmet behavioral health needs, minimizing need for arrest and prosecution.”
Medications for Opioid Use Disorder
Access to medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD, also MAT) continues to expand. Two new providers opened their doors in Harford County within the last year.
Community-based organizations
The newly formed Voices of Hope Harford County is a non-profit organization made up of people in recovery, family members, and allies who support recovery throughout Maryland. Voices of Hope goes into the community to provide peer support services and linkage to treatment for those that need it.
Virtual Naloxone Training
Virtual naloxone training and contactless drop-off of naloxone is now available through the Health Department
Because of COVID-19, the Health Department is continuing to implement new strategies aimed at safely reaching individuals who need harm reduction services in the county.
