Stories of Drug Use and Recovery

HIV Blog / August 28, 2020

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing stories of recovery from substance use disorders is more important than ever. People are facing loneliness at unprecedented levels because of the pandemic. Mainstream silence on these issues and negative stigma surrounding drug use persist. Even those in recovery themselves often stay silent due to shame and fear. Stories, however, connect us and combat silence and stigma.

Sharing is not only helpful for people who use drugs, but also for others in our community. Many people still do not fully understand the complexity of substance use or what life looks like for those who struggle with it. Educating people on the realities and struggles of addiction helps decrease stigma and can hopefully result in more people getting the help they need. In sharing your story, you can help facilitate a positive conversation about addiction and recovery in our community.

We need your help. Please share your recovery journey and how your recovery has impacted those around you. Help show people they are not alone. The Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy is highlighting YOUR stories via their “30 Stories” social media campaign. To contribute, email Sandi Gallion at smgallion@harfordcountymd.gov.
