The Health Department investigates complaints of improper food handling practices and suspected foodborne illness associated with a food service facility. Complaints may be called in during normal hours of operation. A secretary will record the information. An environmental health specialist will return the call when he/she returns to the office if the complainant’s contact information is provided. An environmental health specialist in the Division of Food Control may need to speak directly with the complainant in order to obtain all the necessary information and details for an investigation. Since environmental health specialists work outside the office, they are not always available. When complaints are received, every measure is taken to remedy the situation at the food service facility as quickly as possible. In most cases, the environmental health specialist will visit the facility and report the findings to the complainant directly.
