Harford County Cancer Community Coalition
Harford County Health Department’s Community Cancer Coalition is comprised of representatives from community agencies, minority organizations, hospitals, local businesses, government, and private citizens. These representatives work together with the staff of the Health Department’s Cancer Prevention Program to promote services of this program to Harford County residents. Community Cancer Coalition membership is open to any person or organization interested in cancer prevention, education, screening, and treatment. Local Public Health Component
In Fall 2018, the Cancer Coalition decided to join forces with the Harford County Local Health Improvement Coalition Chronic Disease Prevention and Wellness workgroup to build a stronger relationship with other partners around the area to work on prevention efforts. Purpose: With the passage of SB896/HB1425, the Maryland General Assembly established a Local Public Health Component as a part of the Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment program under the Cigarette Restitution Fund program. The purpose of the Local Public Health Component is to reduce cancer mortality in Maryland and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes.
Status: In the fiscal year 2001, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provided grant funding to each of the 23 local health departments for cancer prevention, education, screening, and treatment. The local health departments developed their infrastructures, hired staff, and many began screening in the final quarter of the fiscal year 2001. Harford County Health Department provides education, prevention, and screening for colorectal cancer, and education and prevention for Breast and Cervical cancers. A health educator can also provide education on the above cancers to organizations, groups, churches, clubs, schools, etc., at no cost. For more information, please call 410-942-7390.
