Q: What are sharps?

A: Sharps include needles, syringes, and other related medical supplies such as lancets, razor blades, broken glass, and any other sharp object which could cut someone or pierce the skin.

Q: Why do I need to properly dispose of sharps?

A: Used sharps can pose health risks unless properly disposed of. Every year more than one million accidental needle sticks are reported, and it is estimated that an additional 66% needle sticks per year go unreported. Accidental needle sticks can transmit infectious diseases. Proper disposal minimizes these risks.

Q: Where can I dispose of my sharps?

A: You may utilize our Edgewood disposal kiosk or safely dispose at home.

Q: How do I prepare sharps for disposal?

A: Store sharps in a puncture-resistant, leak-proof container. Heavy plastic, non-see through containers with screw-on caps are ideal. Laundry detergent and fabric softener bottles are best.

Fill the container no more than two-thirds full. Securely close the container. You may seal the cap with duct tape if you wish.

Q: How do I dispose of sharps at the kiosk?

A: The kiosk is located to the left of the door at the main entrance. Open the hopper door and place your container inside. Release the hopper door. If the kiosk is full, the hopper is locked, or you notice any other issue, please call (410) 612-1779.

The kiosk is accessible 24 hours per day year round, including weekends and holidays.

Q: How do I dispose of sharps at home?

A: Before disposing of your sealed container, write “DO NOT RECYCLE” in permanent marker on the container.

Containers should be put out with regular trash. Do not recycle these items.
