Safe Disposal of Household Sharps (Needles & Syringes)

Improper disposal of needles and syringes used at home can pose serious health risks. Loose sharps in the trash may cause injury or spread infections to sanitation workers and others who may come in contact with your household waste.

To protect your community and yourself, follow these safe disposal options:

🧴Option 1: Use an FDA-Cleared Sharps Container

  • Place used needles, syringes, or lancets immediately into a FDA-cleared sharps disposal container.
  • These containers are designed to prevent needlesticks and leaks.
  • Available for purchase at most pharmacies, medical supply stores, online retailers, or through your healthcare provider.

📦Option 2: Use a Strong Household Container

  • Use a rigid plastic container (e.g., laundry detergent or bleach bottles)—not thin plastic like milk jugs or water bottles.
  • Make sure it has a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid and a narrow opening.
  • Clearly label the container “SHARPS”.
  • When full, tape the lid closed securely and place it in your regular household trash.
  • Do not place loose sharps in the trash or recycling bin.

📍Option 3: Drop-Off or Mail-Back Programs

  • Some private companies offer sharps mail-back or collection services.
  • To find a drop-off or mail-back location near you, call 1-800-643-1643 or visit the org website.
  • You can also ask your primary care provider if they offer needle exchange or disposal services.

💡Additional Tips:

  • Never flush needles or other sharps down the toilet.
  • Keep sharps containers out of reach of children and pets.
  • If you support someone who uses injectable medications or substances, help them access safe disposal options.

Important Note for Businesses:

These instructions apply only to household-generated sharps. Businesses and healthcare providers must follow medical waste disposal regulations specific to commercial entities.
