The Bureau of Environmental Health’s Permits and Plan Review Division will review the below items and might require completion of these items prior to approval of your Demolition Permit:
- Well(s)
- Protect during demolition.
- Locate, abandon and seal according to Health Department guidelines. (Guidelines enclosed.)

- Septic Systems(s)
- Protect during demolition
- Locate pump and abandon according to Health Department guidelines.
(Guidelines enclosed.) Provide copy of pump-out receipt to Health Department.
- Public Sewer (Requirements will be detailed)
- Power Utilities – Disconnect all energy source(s) to the structure(s).
- Electric*
- Natural Gas*
- Oil
- Propane
- Other
*Have power company disconnect and certify gas/electric service to the structure(s)

- Asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) – Contact the Health Department for removal and disposal requirements. Contact Maryland Dept. of the Environment (MDE) at www.mde.state.md.us/asbestos or 410-537-3200 for notification.
- Hazardous Materials – Remove and properly dispose of all hazardous materials as required. Contact the Health Department or MDE (410) 537-3400 for hazardous materials handling and disposal requirements. Contact Emergency Operations Center (410) 638-4900 regarding leaks or spills.

- Underground storage tanks (UST’s) – Remove and dispose of any UST’s as required. Contact Health Department or MDE at (410) 537-3442 regarding UST removal.
- Solid Waste/Debris – Remove and properly dispose of all solid waste and debris. Do not burn or bury. Provide a copy of disposal receipts/tickets. Control dust.
- Structural Security/Integrity – The owner is responsible for maintaining the property in a safe manner at all times. Any structure (i.e., buildings, septic tanks, wells, etc.) found to be open, accessible, or unsafe, will result in a Notice of Violation (NOV) to correct the problem(s).
- Demolition by Fire – Demolition by fire requires an open burning permit issued by the Health Department to the local fire department. Special conditions apply.
- Other issues:
Contact the Health Department immediately if any unknown environmental issues are discovered.
