Falls of Depression

Fall is beautiful. The leaves turn beautiful colors, the air is cool and of course, pumpkin spice everything is available. But what also comes with these things I love is my depression. It hits me and sends chills through my body like the crisp air. The sun sets earlier and when the light in the sky fades the depression sets in. I begin to have trouble getting out of bed and this feeling of dread comes over me when the alarm clock goes off. I want so much to throw the covers over my head and sleep the day away.

I love my job, my family, and my life so what is there to be depressed about? It took years for me to really become aware of what happens this time of year but now that I am, I am able to do things to help myself cope with the changes. While not one thing is a “cure” there are things I can do to help. When the days begin to get shorter, I try my best to get at least 30 minutes of outside time in the sun. If that is not an option, I use a light therapy lamp. This helps with the gloomy mood and mimics the sunlight to help boost me on the dreary days. I also reach out to those that I can talk to when I feel this way. Know you are not alone and when you feel like you want to keep those covers over you, that is the time to reach out and talk to someone.
