-The State of Maryland now has MD COVID Alert, Maryland’s implementation of the Google and Apple exposure notifications express technology! MD COVID Alert is a complement to Maryland’s traditional contact tracing efforts (not a replacement or alternative) and is another tool in our toolbox to stem the spread of COVID-19 in our state.
- MD COVID Alert uses Bluetooth technology that determines if 2 phones are in “close contact” with each other. Later, if one of the phones is used to report a COVID diagnosis, the other phones that were in close contact receive an alert of possible exposure to COVID-19. Contact tracers play a critical role in implementing this new technology as they provide a verification code to cases during the case investigation interview. The verification code is needed for the case to report his/her diagnosis and thereby trigger alerts to phones that meet the definition for close contact during the infectious period of the case.
