Substance Use Recovery Story 19

Uncategorized / August 25, 2021

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when I crossed the line of drinking and using substances “for fun” to using because I felt I needed to. When I look back, the progression started in high school. It started as drinking and smoking pot occasionally to becoming more and more frequent. Things escalated pretty quickly when that paired with getting a prescription for opiates due to a sports injury later in high school.

I believe I had a few turning points in seeking recovery which started with having to drop out of college at 19 years old. It was a big blow to me and my family as I was on a golf scholarship at Loyola University and felt I had squandered a big opportunity. Homelessness and jail quickly followed leaving school which gave me a new level of desperation. Finally, I found a new level of willingness when I was arrested in 2014 for living in a stolen car and I knew I had to make a change.

I found a home in Alcoholics Anonymous which has become the foundation of my recovery. Prior to achieving any stability, I was assisted by the Harford County Health Department in getting into a treatment center. I was also assisted by ACR for funding for a sober living home, The Lighthouse, which I am still closely connected to today.

My life today revolves around recovery and trying to help others receive the help they need. I work for Ashley Treatment as a clinical outreach representative. I have a great relationship with my family and friends today which did not seem possible for a long time. I have also gotten back into golf which has become a big hobby for me again and a way to connect with other people in recovery. I am in awe most days of where my life is and how much it has changed in 6 years. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way and I hope I can be there to do the same for others.
