Snowball Stands

GUIDELINES FOR SNOWBALL STANDS

Definition:

A Snowball Stand as defined by Harford County Government is “a small detached structure intended specifically for the sale of snowballs with no entry by the general public”

Snowball Stands are required to be licensed by the Harford County Health Department (HCHD) and must meet all applicable requirements of all county agencies.

• If this is a new Snowball Stand, please follow the Plan Review Guidelines.
• If this is a previously owned Snowball Stand, please follow the Change of Ownership Guidelines.

Minimum Requirements:

Please be advised that the following minimum requirements must be met before a Food Service Facility License can be issued for a Snowball Stand. By meeting these minimum requirements, we can ensure a safe product for your customers.

1. Ice must come from an approved source.
2. Handwashing facilities must be approved. A gravity type system within the stand, with a catch basin below the unit is acceptable.
3. Flavorings and topping must come from an approved source. Flavorings or concentrates which require the addition of water are not permitted.
4. Flavoring dispensers must be cleanable.
5. All food contact surfaces and splash zones on the interior of the stand must be washable.
6. If an ice crusher is used, it must meet standards set by the National Sanitation Foundation, (NSF), or equivalent.
7. All outer openings must be protected to prevent insect and rodent entry. (Screened windows and self-closing doors.)
8. Protection for single service items (i.e., cups, spoons) must be provided.
9. Floors shall be non-absorbent and easily cleanable. Unfinished wood is not acceptable.
10. The interior area of the stand must be illuminated with twenty (20) footcandles of shielded light throughout.
11. No type of ice cream is permitted for sale.
